Progression Routes
BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council) |
| BTEC Nationals are qualifications designed to provide highly specialist work-related qualifications in a range of vocational sectors. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment. The qualifications also provide career development opportunities to higher education, degree and professional development programmes, provide progression opportunities within the same cognate or related areas of study within universities and other institutions | |
Progression Routes to a BA Honour degree. |
| The schematic on the below shows the different progression paths available to move from Secondary Education to Further Education and Higher Education. They are basically the Vocational BTEC route and the Academic route starting at the KCSE, GCE "O" Level (IGCSE) then move either to the BTEC National Diploma / Applied GCE's or to the A-level / AS-level. At that point, bridges are available to select the road to a First Degree either through the Vocational BTEC Higher National Diploma or directly through the Academic path. |
Considerations |
| In the case that a learner's objectives is to achieve a BA Honour Degree from a University abroad, various considerations come into play in addition to the differences between Vocational and Academic routes. | |
Benefits |
| The first one is the qualitative value attached to a qualification from a renowned University. The second is the learning environment supported by an abundance of teaching resources. The third is the enriching learning exposure that a modern and cosmopololitan society provides outside the campus. |
Constrains |
Alternative |
The major one is finance. From A level, a 3 years of study abroad would cost between 6 and 7 millions Kshs. to the sponsors (parents). |
An HND qualification in AGT and a Degree from abroad as a top up will cost less than 2.5 millions Kshs. The combination of Degree and HND qualification is favoured by employers and offers a higher employability and career opportunities. |
